Pilot Phase:

March - June 2006: UK Biobank Pilot Assessment

Main Phase:

April 2007: The first assessment centre of the main study opens (includes a touchscreen questionnaire, a range of physical measures and collection of biological samples)

Additional measures incorporated

April 2009:
  • Touchscreen Questionnaire: Hearing test; Cognitive function tests

  • Physical measures: Heel ultrasound (both heels, previously just one); Arterial stiffness

  • 24-Hour recall diet questionnaire

August 2009:
  • Physical measures: Eye measures (visual acuity, autorefraction, intraoccular pressure)

  • Blood collection: RNA blood sample; saliva sample

December 2009:
  • Physical measures: Eye measures (Optical Coherence Tomography)

  • Exercise test/ECG

July 2010: Recruitment ends
March 2012: UK Biobank Resource is launched
February 2011 - June 2012: Internet-based 24-hr recall diet questionnaire (x4)
March 2013: Death and cancer registry data for participants in England and Wales available
December 2013:
  • Death and cancer registry data available for participants in Scotland

  • Repeat assessment data available for 20,000 participants

  • In-patient hospital data available for participants in England

June 2014:
  • Nutrient data available from the 24-hour diet recall

  • In-patient hospital data available for participants in Scotland

July 2014:
  • Physical activity monitor data available for 30,000 participants

  • Objective measures of built environment available for participants resident in Wales and Greater London Area

October 2015:
  • Imaging data available for 5,000 participants

  • Web-based questionnaire data on cognitive function
