Notes
This location information is based on the postcode for an address at which the participant is believed to have been resident, derived from a number of sources.
The location coordinates use the Ordnance Survey (OSGB) reference, floored to the nearest kilometre. This north coordinate needs to be used in conjunction with the east coordinate in Field 32223 and the date in Field 32220.
For most purposes, grid coordinates rounded to a 1km distance will provide sufficient information on location of residence at assessment. Research proposals that require location details to a finer level of granularity (i.e. 100m) should request Field 32221 and Field 32222, however access to those fields will only be granted in exceptional circumstances where they are deemed essential for a particular research question.
There are cases where the home location grid co-ordinates fall within low population density areas, i.e. where fewer than 50 individuals live within a 1km^2 circular area centred on the home location. In these cases the 1km grid coordinates are redacted using a special value of -997 (Data-Coding 2535).
In addition, 10km home location grid co-ordinates are available (Field 30066 and Field 30067) and it is recommeneded that researchers use both sets of fields to get a complete dataset.
In some cases participants will appear to be at the same location at consecutive times. This occurs because there is a difference of under 1km in the distance between two consecutive locations according to the more granular data.
This field supersedes Field 22704 as part of an update to home location history data to correct some problems with the original dataset. Please see the description on Category 150 for more information.
Coding 2535 defines 3 special values:
- -999 represents "Grid co-ordinates could not be assigned to address"
- -998 represents "Participant's address flagged as invalid"
- -997 represents "Grid co-ordinates redacted"
