Abstract
As men age, some of their blood cells lose the Y chromosome. Previous studies have identified potential health outcomes that may be more common in men with high levels of Y loss in their blood. We investigated potential risk factors that lead to increased Y loss as well as the potential impacts of mosaic Y loss on a variety of health conditions measured by the UK Biobank. Our findings suggest mosaic Y loss increases with age and smoking and could also be influenced by ancestry. Additionally, we find evidence that Y loss is a potential biomarker for several health-related outcomes including cancer risk and all-cause mortality.
