The UK Biobank population is comprised of 89% of participants recruited in England, 7% recruited in Scotland; and 4% recruited in Wales. Obtaining linked inpatient hospital data for the entire cohort has involved linking to separate providers in each of these regions. Data can vary in terms of content (quantitative and qualitative), quality, geographical and temporal coverage.
UK Biobank aims to unify all hospital records received from each data provider into a single research-ready dataset that is amenable to analysis by approved researchers. This document outlines the steps taken to map data items between England, Scotland and Wales.
