About
Heart failure (HF) describes a highly prevalent and chronic condition in which the heart is no longer able to cope with its workload. In response to chronic disease stimuli, such as high blood pressure or cardiac valve defects, HF is often preceded by several years of adverse cardiac remodelling (changes in heart shape and size). During this period the heart also changes it's metabolism (how it uses energy and fuels), which we think might contribute to important protective mechanisms. In this context, we aim to improve our understanding of how metabolism impacts cardiac function via interrogation and integration of clinical outcomes, cardiac imaging and genetic data. Moreover, we aim to systematically assess the suitability of circulating metabolites regarding their suitability as HF biomarkers. Particularly regarding the entity's often creeping disease progression, the early and precise detection of patients at risk is necessary to initiate adequate preventive measures. Ultimately, we hope to improve the outcome of affected patients via improved detection and novel therapeutic options. The project is scheduled to be completed within 36 months.1 Publication
